How do I know when my teenaged child needs help?

  

  • Depressed mood, hopelessness, or extreme sadness

 

  • Anxiety, worries, or fears that interfere with sleep, relationships, or daily routine

 

  • Direct or indirect talk about suicide or wanting to die

 

  • Sudden change of peer group

 

  • Decline in school performance

 

  • A significant change in attitude that interferes with relationships or tasks

 

  • A mood that seems "too good" for a significant period of time especially when

               paired with risk taking or extreme or excessive behaviors

 

  • Significant changes in sleep or eating habits

 

  • Sudden weight loss

 

  • Anorexia or bulimia (restriction of food, excessive eating and vomiting or laxative

              use

 

  • Evidence of drug or alcohol use

 

  • Behavior problems such as shoplifting, running away, or skipping school
