Psychotherapy for Adults

I work with adults of all ages.  The challenges of life in today's world are often overwhelming.  Decades ago more of us lived in small communities near our extended families and the support of lifelong friends and neighbors.  When immediate family members were unable to meet our needs, we often had an aunt, an uncle, a grandparent, or some other caring, wise person to go to.

Additionally, today, most of us work more and rest less.  There is evidence that some disorders are related to the overstimulation of the electronic world.  The rules of relationships have changed, and with email and texting, we interact without eye contact, facial cues, or a warm touch.

Our models for dating, marital relationships, parenting, and healthy aging are fewer as we live more separately from family and less connected within our communities.  Self-help books do not substitute for the learning that occurs within a healthy family and community.

Seeking help is honorable.  It often requires great amounts of courage.  Sharing intimate thoughts and telling another person about experiences and behaviors that perhaps have been held secret, requires a safe and trusting relationship.  My hope as a therapist is to earn that trust.

I provide strict guidelines when treating those with addictions.  You may be asked to be assessed for intensive outpatient treatment at a licensed addiction treatment center or to seek inpatient treatment if you are unable to recover in a less restrictive setting.  I often recommend twelve-step meetings (AA, NA, GA, SA, etc), and sometimes require attendance as a condition of treatment.

Issues and people who I am unable to treat:

  • People who are court ordered to receive substance abuse treatment
  • Domestic Violence issues when the abuse is still occurring
  • Those who have been charged with sexual crimes
