"A person's a person, no matter how small."

Dr. Suess

Children in Therapy

It is hard to imagine a child's internal world.  Young children lack the vocabulary and self-understanding to explain themselves to adults.  Lacking adequate words, kids communicate their beliefs and cocerns indirectly through their behaviors.  Their feelings are shown to us in their play and during daily activities.

  • An angry toddler bites and and says "no" when given direction.
  • A sad child seems unmotivated and disinterested.
  • A child with hurt feelings say "I hate you."
  • Unable to accept divorce, a child uses dolls to imagine mom and

           dad still together.

  • After the loss of a parent, a child becomes extra dependent and

           has trouble separating.

Knowing when to seek help for a young child can be a difficult judgment call.  Without spending lots of time with many children, it is hard to know what is normal and typical for children at different ages.  All children have feelings of sadness and anger, are inattentive at times, and sometimes refuse to listen and cooperate.

When to Seek Help

Deciding whether or not to seek professional help is often difficult.  Frequently, parents disagree about whether or not to involve a professional in the life of their child or children.  Consider the following when making this important decision:

  • Ask your pediatritian or other doctor.  Get his or her assessment or opinion.
  • Does your child seem unusually sad, or sadder than other children?
  • Compared to other children, does our child have more angry outburst?
  • Is your child easily frustrated or discouraged?
  • Does your child have difficulty playing with other children?
  • Are you feeling frustrated or powerless as a parent?
  • Has there been a crisis, significant loss, or major change in your child's life?
  • Has your child's behavior, sleep patterns, or apetite changed significantly?
